Alexandra Workwear scoops prestigious national industry award

13 November 2020

The UK’s leading workwear company, Alexandra, has won a national Supply Chain Excellence Award for its response to the coronavirus pandemic.

Alexandra secured gold in the Healthcare and Pharmaceutical category at a virtual ceremony held on 12 November.

The company, based at Thornbury near Bristol, has transformed its business operations during the Covid crisis. During the pandemic peak, there was a 600 per cent increase in demand for scrubs when Alexandra was dealing with a rise from 22,000 to 130,000 items a week being requested.

In a matter of weeks, the company turned its operations around with over 90 per cent of manufacturing capacity in its UK and international factories being switched to producing scrubs for the NHS.

Alexandra also marshalled and expanded its extensive supply chain network to source millions of pieces of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as masks, nitrile gloves and aprons to support frontline NHS and care workers.

Alexandra was one of five shortlisted entries in the Healthcare & Pharmaceutical Supply Chain Excellence Award, which recognises outstanding achievement in supply chain management.

They then had to present members of a 32-strong judging panel of experienced supply chain industry leaders in order to win the prestigious award which celebrates all that supply chain has achieved in 2020.

Rebecca Jones, Global Sales and Commercial Director at Alexandra, said: “Considering the profile of the organisations we were up against, winning this award is a remarkable achievement for us and is recognition for what has been a monumental effort from our staff during the pandemic.

“From developing clear face coverings for the deaf to sizing 12,500 medical students using zoom calls and video guides, the way our entire workforce has adapted and innovated in the past eight months has been incredible. I am immensely proud of everyone involved.”

The Supply Chain Excellence Awards are now into their 24th year and attract entries from across the UK and Europe. They have become the benchmark for supply chain best practice and are renowned for their rigorous judging process.

A spokesman for the Supply Chain Excellence Awards said: “Alexandra showed a high level of care for the public and delivered under high profile and high-pressure circumstances. The judges were impressed by the passion they showed in their entry.”

Alexandra, which employs more than 1,500 people, is the UK’s largest workwear solutions provider and has been designing and manufacturing garments since 1854.

Tina Graves, Senior Director of Commercial Sales and Business Operations at Alexandra who accepted the award, said: “We are absolutely delighted and honoured to accept this award. We’ve been supplying to the NHS since its inception and it has been great to be able to support those crucial frontline workers during this pandemic.”
